When a worn electric bike battery is worth rebuilding and when a new pack is cheaper. Cells, BMS and what sits in Almaty right now.
Sur-Ron battery: rebuild it or replace the whole pack
Short answer: if the bike still runs and only the range has dropped, the pack is almost always repaired by rebuilding it - replacing the tired cells and, if needed, the BMS board. A whole new pack makes sense when the case is damaged, the battery has been in water, or someone has already filled it with cells from different batches and different ages. A new Sur-Ron pack costs 400 000 tenge here; a single 21700 cell runs from 1500 to 3200 tenge depending on the model.
Telling whether the battery is actually the problem
A pack does not fail overnight. First the last few kilometres of range disappear, then the bike starts cutting power on a climb while the gauge still shows half. None of that points only at the battery: an overheating controller and a loose connector on the power line behave the same way. That is why the workshop measures voltage group by group before anything gets replaced.
The 2025 Light Bee X spec sheet lists a 60V 40Ah pack and a stated range of 75 km at 40 km/h. Those numbers come from flat ground at a constant speed. Nobody gets them in the mountains around Almaty, and a bike that now does 50 km with a lot of climbing is not automatically broken.
What a rebuild is
An electric bike pack is a set of cells wired into groups, plus a BMS board watching their voltage and temperature. Cells rarely die all at once. Usually one or two groups sag, and the whole pack starts behaving like its worst group.
A rebuild means opening the case, finding the tired groups, replacing them and welding the connections again. Replacement cells have to match the chemistry and sit close in capacity: mixing types inside one pack sends the fresh group drifting after the old ones within weeks.
The catalogue carries the 21700 cells these packs are built from: EVE 50PL, Eve 50e, Eve 58e, Samsung 50G, Samsung 50S, Samsung 50E, Lishen 4000 mAh, Reliance NR21700-RS50. All of them are in Almaty right now, priced between 1500 and 3200 tenge each. How many you need depends on which groups sagged, and that is worked out after diagnostics rather than over the phone.
BMS boards are sold separately. They get replaced when the pack stops balancing its groups or trips into protection with no load on it.
When a rebuild is the wrong call
Three cases where we say buy a new pack instead.
The case is cracked or water has been inside. Even if the bike rides, the joints are already corroding and you will be opening it again next season.
The pack is old throughout rather than in places. When every group has sagged by roughly the same amount, you end up replacing nearly all the cells and the bill approaches the price of a new battery.
Someone has already mixed batches in there during an earlier repair. That can be sorted out, but it takes longer and costs more than fitting a proper pack.
Building one yourself
People do build their own, and that is what most of our cell sales go to. Two things spoil a home build more often than anything else.
First, sort cells by measured capacity, not by what is printed on the wrapper. Even one batch has spread in it, and a group should be built from close matches.
Second, weld the joints, do not solder them. A soldering iron holds heat on the cell longer than the cell tolerates and damages it inside. It will still work, it just will not last as long as its neighbours.

Common questions
How long does an electric bike battery last? Nobody can give an honest figure in kilometres or years. It depends on how the pack is charged, how cold it gets ridden and how often it is taken down to empty. The first real sign is not age but shrinking range with the same riding.
Can I fit a bigger pack? Physically it is often possible, but the limit is rarely the battery itself. It is the space in the frame, the added weight, and whether the controller can handle it. Bring the bike and we will look.
How long does a Sur-Ron battery take to charge? For the 2025 Light Bee X the manufacturer quotes 2.5-3.5 hours with the standard charger, and about two hours to go from 20 to 80 percent. The exact time depends on the starting charge and the battery temperature, and cold weather stretches it.
The range drops in winter. Is that normal? Yes. Any lithium pack loses capacity in the cold and gets it back when it warms up. What is not normal is range that never comes back in spring, and that pack is worth looking at.
