Common questions
- Do the chain and sprockets really have to go together?
- A worn sprocket chews through a new chain in a handful of rides, and a stretched chain does the same to a fresh sprocket. That is why they sit next to each other here, and why we talk people out of buying just one.
- How do I read the chain pitch and the tooth count?
- The pitch is usually stamped on a link, and the tooth count is either printed on the sprocket or counted off it. If counting is not how you want to spend the evening, give us the model and year and we will look it up.
- Can I change the gearing?
- Yes, a different front sprocket trades top speed for acceleration or the other way round. Tell us which one you are short of, drive up a long climb or speed on the flat, and we will pick from what is in Almaty.
- What else is worth checking while the chain is off?
- The tensioner, the slider and the rear wheel bearings. Bearings we replace in the workshop, and grit in that corner of the bike kills a fresh set faster than mileage does.
